There was a respectful hush over the Square Brewery last Thursday night, as the audience listened carefully. In fact, Pete du Pon remarked on how "polite" Petersfield audiences seemed to be, and good listeners.
Pete took the opportunity to showcase mainly new songs, but also some familiar tunes, including Sensitive Soul and Lost. It was impossible to pick out a favourite, as all of them were excellent and well received by the captive audience, which applauded enthusiastically after every song.
Only accompanied by Paul Williams on lead guitar this time, (it was a "credit crunch band!" Pete said) he explained that he usually gigs with a cellist and drummer as well, but still, the lighter approach did no harm. Paul’s measured slide playing and voice complimented Pete’s singing and guitar work very nicely indeed.
There was also some good-natured banter between the duo in between songs, including Pete teasing Paul for his casual appearance, and a minor technical glitch with a tempermental guitar was dealt with with humour.
The time seemed to fly by, and with such a keen audience, an encore seemed inevitable. Pete obliged with My First Day, which had the back rows singing along, and some of those standing too, as unsurprisingly, the room was packed out again. The audience wanted another tune too, but there was not time.
Ben Pinwill and Jess Wilson ensured the evening got off to a good start. For all those who braved the rain to come out and listen, it was well worth it.
